How To Stop Emotional Eating

Hypnosis for binge eating is becoming more and more popular in Melbourne these days. As the years go by I’m seeing more people in my clinic who desperately want to face their food demons head on.

Binge eating is a much more common problem than you may think. In fact I would go as far as to say that 90% of my weight loss hypnotherapy clients in Melbourne have some degree of emotional eating or binge eating that they’re dealing with.

Our minds can be very good at playing tricks on us. One of the biggest causes of binge eating is ‘false’ thoughts that come into the mind. These false thoughts often have no logical grounding, but they can often trigger a binge.

Knowledge Is Power

Steps you can take to stop emotional overeating

When I work with my clients I ask them to record the thoughts that come into their heads just before a binge. This isn’t as easy as it sounds. Often you may not be aware of exactly what you are thinking at the time and it takes practice to catch those thoughts.

But once you do, you know exactly what you are dealing with. It’s kind of like recording all of your spending to the last cent; you may not know why you’re struggling financially until you can be brutally honest with yourself about just how much money you are spending and what you’re spending it on.

So if you really want to take charge of your situation, I suggest that you create a ‘thoughts budget.’ Begin by taking an inventory of your thoughts by recording them as they come up.

Below I have listed the top three thoughts that cause of binge eating. I have also included a logical, rational rebuttal of each thought, followed by a positive affirmation. The idea is to record the thought, challenge it and then replace it with the positive affirmation.

ONE: I Can’t Stop Doing This

I CAN stop doing this. Right now I am simply choosing not to stop doing this. I have a choice and I choose to grow stronger and better with every day.

I deserve be healthy and happy.

TWO: I’m Hopeless. I Might As Well Just Stuff My Face

I am feeling really down right now but that will pass. Sometimes I feel hopeless but that doesn’t mean I can’t take positive steps to improve my life and my health. I will do whatever it takes to move forward. Each day I am getting better and better.

I deserve be healthy and happy.

THREE: I’m a Failure Anyway. I’ll Never Lose Weight

I am feeling really helpless at the moment and I am terrified of failing. I acknowledge that I am feeling this way right now but I also know that like everything, these feelings will pass. I will feel better soon.

I deserve be healthy and happy.

Use Your Mind To Change Your Behaviour

I’ve talked about affirmations before, and I’m not suggesting that you say things to yourself that are so far-fetched they’ll only make you angry. So, for example if you believe you’re ‘ugly’, then going around saying ‘I’m beautiful’ simply won’t work.

That’s because the affirmation is so far removed from what you actually believe that it feels fake. BUT if instead you could say ‘I appreciate that I am so much more than my physical body’, this is a positive step in the right direction.

Affirmations are one of the many tools you can use to change your mindset. But if you want to do it quickly, a qualified hypnotherapist in Melbourne can help you by working directly with your subconscious mind to change the destructive beliefs and mind patterns that are keeping you stuck in one place.
