How To Do Affirmations Correctly

In today’s video we’re going to be talking about how to do affirmations correctly.

You may have heard of the benefits of positive affirmations, and maybe have even tried them with mixed results. When I first started learning about the mind, I decided it would be a great idea to establish a daily practice to enhance my own wellbeing.

.

For several weeks I religiously repeated my carefully chosen positive statements over and over again, both aloud and silently; but as the weeks went by, I started to feel really anxious for no good reason.

I was telling all this to my hypnotherapist, and asking her advice. Her response was: ‘…Then stop doing the affirmations’.

Affirmations Can Have The Opposite Effect

At the time I thought it was a pretty silly response. I mean, practising affirmations is supposed to help you feel better… right?

Well, that depends.

Here’s an example:, Suppose you’ve got a serious self-esteem problem; you continually beat yourself up, compare yourself with others and generally feel unworthy most of the time.

If you decide to repeat the affirmation ‘I love and accept myself exactly as I am’, not only are you not going to believe it, but’s likely to make you feel really irritated, because it’s so far off from where you are that you can’t even begin to accept that statement as true.

While the repetition of positive affirmations is designed to change your beliefs, you just can’t get from self-loathing to self-love in one hit.

.

You have to ease your way into better feeling thoughts. With that in mind, a more appropriate affirmation in this case would be ‘I like the idea that I can train my mind to feel better about myself.’

Affirmations Should Not Make You Feel Worse

You don’t necessarily have to fully believe the affirmation you’re saying, but it shouldn’t make you feel worse either. The goal of affirmations is to get you feeling better so that with regular practise, you’ll remove your unwanted beliefs.
