How To Listen To Your Body

Intuitive Eating: 3 Simple Steps To Listen To Your Body

I was having a conversation with a good friend of mine about how to listen to your body. She was on a weight loss regime and was eating a healthy, balanced diet most of the time.

She was telling me that she was off to one of her favourite restaurants that night for a well-earned ‘cheat night’.

So anyway, I received an email from her the very next say saying that she was sick as a dog. Apparently her body has become so accustomed to clean eating that when she ate her favourite dessert (apple cobbler) it was just too much for her system to handle.

Bottom line; her body was telling her something and it wasn’t going to stop until she listened up.

Our bodies are communicating with us all day, every day; but most of us don’t bother to pay attention. If you want to lose weight, improve your health or heal a physical illness, the best thing you can do it tap into your body’s infinite wisdom.

I’ve put together my top 3 tips for getting in touch with your body below:

ONE: Meditate

A great way to get in touch with what your body needs is to meditate. When you meditate, you quiet the chatter in your mind and that’s when ideas, inspiration and insights can come to you about the next logical step in your body’s journey.

You only need to do 15 minutes a day, and it doesn’t have to be formal meditation. You can listen to a guided meditation (self-hypnosis) track or you can do it o your own,

There are no hard and fast rules. The point is, put your body in a comfortable position , take time out once a day to quiet your mind and you’ll be amazed at the insights that will reveal themselves to you.

TWO: Eat Mindfully

Do you shovel down your food as quickly as possible while watching TV or surfing the web? if so, you’re probably eating far more than you need.

Your body knows exactly how much food you need and what kinds of food will most sustain you,but it can’t tell you your channel isn’t open. You need to become an expert in communicating with your body. Here are some tips for eating mindfully:

  • Turn off the TV, sit at the table and remove all other distractions while you are eating;
  • Pay close attention to whether you are hungry before, during and after eating; let your hunger decide for you;
  • Tune into whether you are eating out because you’re actually hungry, or to She was on a fill a deeper emotional need (IE: relieving boredom, tiredness or sadness)

THREE: Trust Your Inner Guidance

Just like my the friend I mentioned before, you have the ability to tap into the infinite intelligence inside you that can show you what to do.

This guidance is always there, but most of us get so busy with the day to day pressures of life that we forget it’s there. It IS there, but you have to open the channel to let it guide you.

No-one knows your body better than you do. If you could trust yourself a little more, you’d be guided to the perfect food, exercise regime and lifestyle that would get you where you want to go much faster than any fad diet or protein shake. Listen to your body. It knows what is best.
