How Your Beliefs Shape Your Life

If you asked me to define belief systems in the simplest way possible, I’d have to say that what we believe to be true comes into our awareness and influences what we do, what we say and how we interact with others.

In terms of your personal growth, your beliefs are everything. They shape your life in every possible way, so it’s in your best interests to pay attention to the ones that aren’t working for you and take steps to change them.

How Beliefs Work

Examples of popular beliefs

Let’s say you’re trying to lose weight. You may think you’re overweight because you eat too much and this is partly true. But why specifically do you eat too much?

Is it because you’re hungry, or because of your beliefs? When I ask my weight loss hypnotherapy clients to finish the sentence ‘I overeat because’, here are some common responses:

  • I have no willpower;
  • I love food too much;
  • I have to eat everything that’s put in front of me

These are all subconscious beliefs that cause you to continue to overeat, even if you don’t want to. As you continue to say these things they become deeply embedded in your subconscious and you act upon them more and more, which allows your negative habits and mind patterns to perpetuate.

Your subconscious mind is your humble servant. It doesn’t have the ability to decide what is true for you. Its job is to bring into your awareness everything that supports your beliefs to the exclusion of everything else.

Therefore, when you say ‘I have no willpower’, your subconscious mind ‘proves’ that to be true for you; and you keep overeating and gaining more weight.

How Hypnotherapy Changes Your Beliefs

A skilled hypnotherapist can find out what beliefs are causing the problem you have and then assist you to move past those beliefs and develop new beliefs that are aligned with who you want to be.

When you’re in a relaxed state, your subconscious mind is open and receptive to the suggestions I make and as a result together we can change the way you think, feel and act. For more information on how this works please read my what is hypnosis page.

The best way to define the beliefs that are getting in the way of your happiness is to see a hypnotherapist who is trained to diagnose your negative mind patterns.
